Vet Visit :(

Well it wasn't good news for poor Starburst. The xrays showed that the leg has not healed. The bones have drifted apart in the splint and there is a gap between the bones meaning they haven't healed. She will have to see the vet again next week to be sedated and the leg re-splinted and possibly have to have a pin. The good news is that she is still healthy and the vet is optimistic about the leg healing, it is just going to take some more time.

Big Night

Well is is a big night for Starburst. She is going to the vet to see how her leg is healing. I must admit I'm a bit nervous for her. I hope all goes well and that her leg is healing just fine!!

a New Name!

Sunny has officially been renamed Starburst as per my daughter. Sunny was just such a common and unimaginative sun conure name I was encouraged to change it. After some deliberation we arrived on Starburst. Could be influenced by the candy but personally I think it sounds like a My Little Pony name...maybe she is a My Little Conure? I'll have to see if she has a cutie mark. Maybe it is under the cast.

Making Friends

Sunny was hanging out today on Jen's shoulder. She was very content to just chill there and get some head scratches. She is soooo sweet. It makes Jamie nervous when she steps up on her hand because she has to use her beak to steady herself. It doesn't hurt but is a bit scary for an 11 year old I guess. She is eating well and I and slowly giving less and less seed in her meals. She flings out alot of the chop and things she doesn't like but she is trying some different foods.
Jamie had a birthday party today and asked her friends to make a donation to PEARL instead of getting her presents. It was all her idea and I am very proud of her!!

Sunny's next steps

The very first task at hand is renaming this sweetie. There are just far too many "Sunny" Sun Conures so we want to change it to something else. My first suggestion of "Ra" was immediatly dismissed out of hand so it won't be Ra.......could have even had a theme song...
Rah rah ah-ah-ah!
Ro mah ro-mah-mah
Gaga ooh-la-la!

But that isn't going to happen...I never get my way when it comes to naming things. I thought my proposal of naming my daughter Eleven but spelling it in Roman Numerals XI was brilliant but I was the only one. Sigh we artists are never understood in our own time.

Sunny is Here!

We picked up Sunny from the foster coordinator last night and she was right Sunny is a super sweet bird! She stepped right up onto my hand within seconds of meeting her and was quite happy getting her head scratched. She is just beautiful! As all conures do, she has quite a squawk but so far she isn't all that vocal.
We have her in a smaller shorter cage until the leg heals. We have to wait till October when we will take her to vet and see how the leg is doing. The vet is hopeful that she will make a full recovery. The unknown is whether or not there was any nerve damage which we won't know until it is unwrapped.  Amputation is an unfortunate possibility but a far better outcome than euthanasia which the former owner wanted. What a shame it would have been to put down a sweet bird like this one. She was lucky to have a compassionate vet who called PEARL.
Once again we are fostering a bird who is on seeds that will need transitioned to a healthy diet. We have had success with so far so I am pretty confident Sunny will be eating her veggies very soon. I am so pleased with how much healthier my other birds seem now that they are all eating better foods.
Sunny presents several challenges for us and we are going to have to just take one day at a time and figure things out as we go along. Perching is one such challenge. Sunny only has 1 good leg and the other is vet taped in a splint so it makes perching difficult. We are going to have to experiment to see what works best for her.
Eating is also a challenge because conures like to pick a piece of food up in their claw and hold it while they chew it up but Sunny won't be able to do that. I realized that as I was cutting up apples for her breakfast. I had to make sure they were small pieces. I also have to make sure the water bowl isn't big enough for Sunny to take a bath as we don't want the splint getting wet.

Meet Sunny!

I want to introduce Sunny a beautiful Sun Conure who is our newest foster. As you can see from the photo poor Sunny has a broken leg. Apparently a dog caused the injury but I don't know how. The vet has splinted it and the leg seems to be healing well. The vet is releasing her in the next day or so. I hear she is a real sweetheart and is only about a year old but that is about all I know about her. I hope her leg heals fine!
